Once SIN taxes, tobacco, marijuana, alcohol, and now apparently includes fizzy drinks, boost local and national coffers, they rarely disappear. Raising taxes and global economy contracts is never a good idea, but it's obviously the plan of choice.

Some of Asia’s biggest soda-guzzling nations are preparing to impose taxes on fizzy drinks as the backlash against the industry mounts in a movement reminiscent of the anti-tobacco campaign.
